Ben Gaudet is a Lead R&D Engineer with UL Solutions fire research and development based in Northbrook, IL. His main technical areas are the development of fire test standards and test equipment, fire testing, and fire modeling. Within the area of battery fire safety, Ben conducts testing and develops safety standards that address the fire and explosion hazards that result from lithium-ion battery thermal runaway. He is a contributing developer for safety standards such as UL 2596: Test Methods for Thermal and Mechanical Performance of Battery Enclosure Materials, UL 1487: Standard for Safety for Battery Containment Enclosures (in development) and UL 9540A: Test Method for Evaluating Thermal Runaway Propagation in Battery Energy Storage Systems.
Ben holds a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering and a Master’s degree in Fire Protection Engineering from Worcester Polytechnic Institute in Massachusetts. He is a registered Professional Engineer in the state of Illinois.
